About Jaydip Biswas

Dr Jaydip Biswas, Director, Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute is a Surgical and Medical Oncologist. He is a faculty and guide of the DNB Surgical Oncology (Post Doctoral Course). 

He did his MBBS from R G Kar Medical College & Hospital, Calcutta and thereafter did his Master in Surgery (MS) in General Surgery from University College of Medicine under Calcutta University. He joined Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital in 1984 as a Resident House Surgeon in the Dept of Surgery. Subsequently in 1986 he joined Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital as a Resident Surgeon from the West Bengal Health Service.Dr Biswas became the Deputy Medical Superintendant in Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute in 1989 with

additional responsibilities of Specialist Grade-II in the Department of Surgical Oncology. In 1995 he became the Head of Surgical Oncology (comprising General Surgery, ENT, Gynaecological Oncology, Urology and Dentistry).  In 1996 he was assigned the additional clinical responsibility as the Head of the Dept of Medical Oncology. He was assigned the administrative responsibility of Medical Superintendant in 1998 and thereafter became the Officer In-Charge (Hospital) in 2000.

On 24th January, 2007 he became the Director of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute. CNCI today has under gone major changes and improvement in the patient care and  management facilities with extensive reorganization and renovation of all the departments, wards, operation theatre complex and laboratories. The Surgical Oncology Department today handles complex surgical procedures backed by a fresh team of well trained competent Surgeons, state-of-art equipments like Laparoscope, CUSA, Operating Microscope, Argon Laser and many more. The entire patient care system is well supported by the Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU) well equipped with all modern gadgets and round-the-clock laboratory back up under the supervision of Department of Anaesthesiology.

The number of Specialists, Junior Doctors, Nursing staff and Technicians has been increased considerably to ensure better attention and treatment of cancer patients. Special Clinics like Mastectomy, Laryngectomy and Speech therapy clinics and Pain and Palliative Care clinics are now available for patients’ rehabilitation and improved supportive care. A fully functioning Endoscopy OT handles the routine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with fibre-optics Endoscopy. The Pathology and Blood Bank departments now have modern updated and automated equipments. The Diagnostic Radiology Department is now equipped with  Mammography, modern X–ray, Ultrasonography with color Doppler set. Installation of a state-of-art CT Scan – 1.5 Tesla MRI machine is under process. At present CNCI hospital is one of the best centres for radiotherapy with two Cobalt Machines Computerized Treatment Planning System, integrated High Dose Brachytherapy (HDR) unit, a fully Computerized Simulated and one Dual Energy Linear Accelerator.

Dr Biswas took keen interest in Clinical trial. Clinical Trial Secretariat and subsequently Clinical Research Department was established in CNCI after Dr.Jaydip Biswas took charge as the Director of the Institute. Presently this department is handling Phase II, III & IV trails. This Institute has got good infrastructure and trained personnel for Phase IB, II & III clinical trials. He has also established the Department of Translational Research, where “bench to bedside” research will be undertaken under his able guidance and in collaboration with both the Scientists and medical Doctors of the Institute, blending the research and hospital units.

He has quite a good number of publications in peer reviewed journals. He is the Principle Investigator in various National & International Clinical trials & also in different Govt. Sponsored research projects.

 

After a successful journey of 10 years as Director of a National Cancer Institute, Prof (Dr) Biswas took voluntary retirement and began a new voyage, with a mission to serve the mankind as an oncologist. He intends to devote his time on the ailing cancer patients, be with them and bring smile on their faces.
